- Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older, certain younger people with disabilities, and people with End-Stage Renal Disease. Understanding Medicare can seem overwhelming, but breaking it down into its parts makes it much more manageable.
- Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)
- Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care. Most people don't pay a premium for Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working.
- Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance)
- Part B covers certain doctors' services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services. You pay a monthly premium for Part B, which is typically deducted from your Social Security benefits.
- Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage)
- Medicare Advantage Plans are offered by private companies approved by Medicare. These plans include all the benefits of Parts A and B, and usually include prescription drug coverage. Many plans offer extra benefits like vision, hearing, and dental coverage.
- Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage)
- Part D adds prescription drug coverage to Original Medicare, some Medicare Cost Plans, some Medicare Private-Fee-for-Service Plans, and Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans. These plans are offered by insurance companies and other private companies approved by Medicare.
- When to Enroll
- Your Initial Enrollment Period generally begins three months before you turn 65 and ends three months after the month you turn 65. Enrolling on time matters because late enrollment penalties can apply in some situations. Confirm the dates and rules for your circumstances on Medicare.gov.
- Choosing the Right Plan
- When selecting a Medicare plan, consider your current health needs, prescription medications, preferred doctors and hospitals, and your budget. A licensed agent can walk you through the options available to you, and Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE, and the Texas Health Information, Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) can show you every option in your area.
